Gun Violence In America

Between 2014 and 2022, there were over 300,000 incidences of gun violence in America, according to the Gun Violence Archive. Because of this growing rate of gun-related incidents, more and more people are victimized each year. Many individuals suffer from physical, mental, or emotional trauma as a result of shootings. And in many cases, the families of those affected by shootings have to help them through this trauma. Families lose loved ones to gun violence every day and may need support in dealing with their grief. Because of this, UCEP’s support group seeks to help victims of gun violence as well as their families.

Support for Victims & Their Loved Ones

Victims of gun violence often suffer long after the shooting. Whether from physical injury or emotional distress, it can be nearly impossible to fully erase the trauma of a shooting. UCEP offers a free and confidential gun violence support group over the phone. Our support group is facilitated by people that have similar experiences. We provide a safe space for participants seeking help to cope with their trauma and to uplift each other.

The Mental Effects of Gun Violence

Many victims of firearm-related incidents suffer from increased stress, anxiety, and even PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) as a result of shooting events. These effects can be devastating to a person’s life and can cause long term issues that are hard to deal with alone.

Additionally, friends, family, and loved ones may also experience trauma and grief for those who were harmed by or lost to gun-related incidents. The fear and anxiety can prevent victims and those close to them from living their lives freely and feeling safe enough to try new things. UCEP’s support group helps provide a sense of understanding and community to aid those dealing with traumatic grief and can provide the resources needed for survivors living with PTSD.
